Ten Keys to Keeping Beautiful Orchids by Donna Jean
There’s nothing more beautiful than a lush, green orchid plant with gorgeous blossoms but the care required to bring this about is sometimes daunting. It doesn’t have to be that way. With the following keys, you can be a successful orchid keeper with a minimum of worry, trouble, and expense.
- Read the instruction card that comes with your plant. Most stores that sell plants will have a small card attached to the pot that explains the basic requirements of the plant you are buying. If you know what the requirements are, you are more likely to succeed in keeping your plant healthy and attractive.
- A consistent temperature will go a long way to preventing shock! Orchids will experience shock resulting in yellow leaves by a temperature change of more than 20°F. Generally orchids are comfortable in temperatures of 65-85°F or 18-30°C. Again, be sure to read the information card.
- Use a suitable container. Don’t leave your orchid plant in the plastic pot it came in for more than a week. You need a container that has more drainage and that will allow more air to get to the roots. Depending on the kind of orchid, you may select a basket, a ceramic pot, or a plastic pot made for orchids. Generally the basket or clay pots are best because they are more porous than plastic but you still need to make sure there are plenty of holes for drainage and air circulation.
- Water your orchids on a schedule. Most orchids prefer to get wet then dry out before being watered again. So find out what your orchid requires and then stay on schedule.
- Feed your orchids after the blossoms are gone. Orchids should be fed about 1/3 the concentration of fertilizer that are used on other plants. Mix the fertilizer into the water every other watering from the time the last bloom fades until the winter begins. This will prepare your plant for the cool nights of winter followed by abundant flowering in the spring.
- Watch the new growth. In the spring, you will see new stems growing out of the base of the old stems and they will usually grow larger than their parent before blossoming. Be careful about pruning the old, dead-looking stems or canes – that may be where your new blossoms will originate.
- Provide air circulation. Make sure the spot you hang or display your orchid plant will get plenty of air circulation. Good air circulation will help to keep the plant leaves and flowers dry. This will make a huge difference in preventing fungal or pest infestations. If the plant leaves look damp, dry them with a soft cloth and then get a little fan to move the air across the plant.
- Repot only when necessary. Orchids prefer to be somewhat root bound with new roots coming up through the top of the media. When you do need to repot, do it carefully and gently.
- Use the correct growing media. The best way to kill your orchid plant is to plant it in soil. Most popular orchids are epiphytes which grow best attached to pieces of bark or cork with their roots surrounded by a potting mix of chopped tree fern fiber, volcanic stone, charcoal, a little peat, and fir bark. Selecting a commercially prepared orchid potting mix is usually best.
- Care for the blooms. Most orchid plants will blossom in late winter to early spring, usually February and March. This is a result of receiving a chill each evening during the winter of about 20°F cooler than the daytime temperatures. If your orchids are house plants, you may want to allow the house to cool down during the night to stimulate the plant to begin blossoming. The blossoms will last from 4 to 12 weeks. When they fade, cut it off about ½ inch above where the flower spikes from the stem or cane.
These ten keys are not difficult and will actually make keeping orchids much easier than you expected. Just wait until you see the beauty and magnificence of your own gorgeous blossoms.
