Like each other season, winter can be a beautiful season to decorate for. One cautionary tip is to make sure any plants you decorate with are hardy enough to withstand the wild changes in temperature and precipitation that winter can bring. Wintry flowers (poinsettias, many white flowers, and a few other species), coniferous plants and elements, and bare tree branches can all be used to create a beautiful winter display. Inevitably your winter decorations will involve Christmas colors and elements, including wreaths and garlands. However, if you’re planning to use this decor through the winter season, base your decor design on more generic wintry elements that can be added to during the Christmas season.
Decorating with Topiaries
Creating topiary plants has to do with cutting and shaping plants into certain designs. Hedges and bonsai trees, which are very dense plants, are a perfect canvas for topiary design. These topiaries come in every shape and sizes ranging from elephants, squirrels and people to elaborate designs, mazes, and even tunnels. Though real topiaries are often enormous in scale, there are many, many designs available with smaller silk plants. One place you can often find silk topiaries are in office buildings, places of worship, and larger public gathering places. The most common design for the silk topiary is the spiral. This is due to the small offices and spaces that these topiaries are required to fill.
Creating Attractive Wreaths
A lovely wreath on your door will tell visitors to your home something about you before they even step inside. Wreaths vary in many ways: the materials used, the shape chosen, the style emulated. To make a basic wreath, procure some silk flowers and a foam ring from a craft store or shopping center. Take the flowers and cut off the stems about one inch from the calyx, or bottom of the flower. Then push the stems of each flower into the ring. As you are positioning the flowers, make sure that the foam is thoroughly covered; however, you do not want your flowers to look too crowded! If you add a bit of glue from a hot glue gun to the base of the flowers before you push them into the ring, your wreath will be less likely to lose or shed pieces. Adding leaves or vines to your wreath works well for extra decoration or for covering up bare spots. You can theme your wreath to the time of year, or use regional flowers for a more local look. Finally, choose what part of the wreath you want on âtopâ and tie a string around that area so that you can hang it on the door.
