Two Easy Ways to Preserve Your Flowers
Drying flowers after special occasions like weddings, graduations, or other fun events is a great way to preserve memories. Because flowers wilt within 2 to 3 weeks (and sometimes closer to 2 to 3 days), you will need to dry them once they are done being displayed. If you are looking for an easy way to preserve your own flowers, there are two methods you can use. The first is to hang the flower(s) upside down. However, it is important to keep a few things in mind: moisture and light are enemies to a perfectly dry flower, so hang your flowers in a cool, dry, dark place. Also, dried flowers are very fragile, so to prevent damage we recommend placing them in a case or shadowbox. The second technique for drying flowers is to press them. If the flower is small and thin, the process will be easy; if the flower is bigger or has a distinct shape (such as a tulip or daffodil), it may be easier to just press the petals.
Using a Tropical Theme
A specialized theme is a fun way to decorate a room. These themes usually have to do with seasons or climates. There are some simple tips that go a long way to creating a tropical feel. Having a lot of greenery is absolutely essential to a tropical setting. Look for more exotic plants with big, bright foliage. Of course, palm trees do very well in creating the tropical look. Another essential is brightly colored flowers. Some restraint is necessary to create a tropical look: you want it to be lush and colorful, but not overpowering. For example, as background colors or foliage you can use quieter or slightly darker hues. Keep in mind that the more natural your look is, the better your tropical theme will work.
Seasonal Decorations
There are a few ideas you may want to think about as you decorate for each season of the year. Choose a few spaces that you will decorate seasonally, and use year-round decorations for other areas in the house. This way, clean-up needs and clutter are both cut down. This could be a calendar area that is designed differently each month, or a shelf on the wall with craft items. Many moms with little kids who don’t want a lot of little decor pieces can choose to have a stuffed animal that changes clothes with each season or month. One way to save money and space is to reuse what you have. Many crafts can be exchanged or reused for different seasons. One of the best examples is exchanging your wreath from one season to another by removing the flowers and replacing them with new flowers appropriate for that season.
Decorating with Silk Grasses
If you are just beginning to delve into the world of interior decorating, it might be worth your while to study some of the different arrangements and styles of silk greenery that exist. If you plan to have a Western or desert-like element to your house, or to one of the rooms, you might want to consider silk grass arrangements. Much smaller than artificial trees, silk grass decorations are comparable to flower displays. They also make great accents for some of the larger greenery. Window ledges and water fountains also look nice with a silk grass arrangement. A benefit to silk grass is that they provide a fresh change from more ordinary flower arrangements. After all, the more styles you try, the more likely you are to find just the right look for each corner of your home.
