How to Fertilize your Plants

Potted plants, as a rule, generally need more fertilizer than non-potted plants. There are two reasons for this: first, potted plants are in their young growing stages and need more nutrients. Also, due to the fact that their soil nutrients are limited to what is in the pot, and those same nutrients are being drowned out by constant watering, it is important to fertilize. Do not let this fact scare you away from potted plants, however: fertilization can actually be quite easy. Local gardening stores sell packages of fertilizer meant for potted plants. Please follow the directions, as each fertilizer can be different. One type of fertilizer you may want to consider is a type that dissolves in water before you add that water to your plant. This makes tending to your plant even easier because it saves you an extra step.

A Real Plant or an Artificial One? That is the Question

A decision to make as you decorate your home is whether you want to use silk plants and flowers or real ones. There are some great pros and cons to each option. Plenty of sunshine and regular watering are necessities for real greenery that you will need to be able to provide. Also, bugs are sometimes drawn to live plants. An advantage to live plants is the green thumb you develop as you care for them and watch them grow. If you are planning to change your greenery based on the seasons, if you like to move furniture and decorations around a lot, or if you yourself may be moving at some point, you will find it easy to store and move silk plants. The most important consideration to be careful of with artificial plants is how true to life they look. Artificial plants can be beautiful, but if it is obvious that they are not real, they lose some of their charm. If your visitors believe that the artificial plants in your home are real, you have done a great job!

Making Centerpieces for Your Home

One of the more common uses for silk plants, flower arrangements, and other small home decor trinkets is as a centerpiece. Centerpieces are usually placed on the dining room table, coffee table, or other prominent area in your home. The goal is not only to create something attractive, but also enhance the other elements of the home. Many centerpieces employ certain designs that cause the viewer to look at the whole picture. For instance, a flower centerpiece that has an X. pattern or direction causes viewers to their eyes from the top left to the bottom right and vice versa. Some arrangements do this by having long strands crossing in the middle. Another great design to incorporate is an arch. The arch can be accomplished by using a variety of flowers, grass, or other shrubbery forming a dome-like shape, with flowers weaving through it. If you would like to find out more about centerpiece designs, there are many pictures available on the internet; home decoration magazines also have great ideas.

Hanging Plants: Picking and Displaying

No matter the size of your house, adding hanging plants make for a great and non-invasive decorative touch. A good variety of silk plants—large and small, wide and narrow, on the floor and on the ceiling—brings uniqueness and variety to your home. Hanging plants are most often placed in corners: a perfect place because it adds brightness to a usually dull and dark area. Another benefit is that hanging plants in corners make them unobtrusive—they don’t take up any needed space. Using the right equipment as you hang your plants prevents you from having problems in the future. Some of the prettiest plants are larger and heaver; these require a metal hook attached directly to a ceiling beam. There is much less to worry about if you decide to hang smaller plants with light containers. As you decide on which hanging plants to use, think about colors of the flowers, shapes of the leaves, the designs of the containers, and how the plant will grow. Whether real or artificial, a hanging plant is yet another tool to use in your home dcor.
