Information Article: Decorating with Ferns by Misha Vasser

There are two distinct ways of decorating with greenery. You can find some beautiful greenery, bring it home, and play around with your furniture layout so that your plant has adequate room and a natural resting place. A different way to go about the process is to make sure your home is designed as you like it, choose areas to add plants or trees, and then shop for something that would fit the areas you have designated. In any case, if you are looking to fill a small location with a good eye-catching plant, you should look at the enormous selection of ferns available. The nature of the fern makes it a natural choice for smaller areas due to its fine, tiny leafage and ability to fill the space it is given as it matures. There is a wide variety of live and artificial ferns. Ferns are pretty resilient, and are fairly easy to care for and maintain. Even more easy to maintain and care for are silk plants. Be aware that when you choose a fern, you are not selecting a very colorful or eye-catching plant, though it still makes a lovely accent. In this fashion you can set up a great theme or pattern using ferns as a backdrop and beautiful flower arrangements that pop out and catch the eye.

Selecting the Best Container for Your Greenery

Choosing the right pot for your flower arrangements, plants, or trees is just as important as choosing the right picture frame for your artwork. You will want to base your pot decisions on the appearance of your greenery, considering things such as color, style, and shape. One example is the bonsai plant: look for a pot with warm, rich colors and an Eastern style. On the other hand, with a bamboo plant the pot should have a more modern design or perhaps use a wicker material. Before you come to a decision, look at several different styles, colors, and materials to make sure you get the best fit. The size of the pot is an area where taste can overrule practicality. Some arrangements are arranged around a very large decorated pot, and in other arrangements the pot is barely visible.

Decorating with Palm Trees

Most people, when they think of artificial trees, think of a pine tree or Christmas tree. Few would think of the palm tree as a choice in artificial trees. These two tree types are extremely different, not only in local environment but also in appearance. There is actually a wide variety of palm trees, and many of these varieties are available as artificial plants as well. Tall, tropical palm trees (like what you would expect to find on the beach) are the most sought after style. Because the palm tree has very broad, extended leaves, you will want to know the girth of the tree. You will need to plan to place the tree at some distance from the wall so the leaves are not smashed against it. Smaller palm trees are usually sufficient when decorating inside the home.

The Pros and Cons for Live and Artificial Plants

A decision to make as you decorate your home is whether you want to use silk plants and flowers or real ones. There are some advantages and disadvantages with either selection. Make sure that if you choose live plants, sunlight and water are readily available to them. Real plants naturally attract insects, which could be a problem where you are living. An advantage to live plants is the green thumb you develop as you care for them and watch them grow. If you are planning to change your greenery based on the seasons, if you like to move furniture and decorations around a lot, or if you yourself may be moving at some point, you will find it easy to store and move silk plants. The most important consideration to be careful of with artificial plants is how true to life they look. Many silk plants and flowers are rendered so perfectly that observers cannot tell their authenticity without touching them. The best compliment an artificial plant can receive is, â€I thought it was real!â€

In this investigation of orchids, first published in 1862, Darwin expands on a point made in On the Origin of Species that he felt required further explanation, namely that he believes it to be ‘a universal law of nature that organic beings require an occasional cross with another individual’. Darwin explains the method by which orchids are fertilised by insects, and argues that the intricate stru…
