Spring flowers by Tamara Jacobs

Fresh cut flowers are a beautiful thing. They smell nice, they look nice and they make us feel really happy and good. Sending a bouquet of flowers to someone is a great way to thank them, cheer them up or wish them for a special occasion. Flowers can really brighten up a room by adding colour and cheer to it, which is why so many people buy flowers for themselves.

With spring around the corner, those of you lucky enough to have outdoor garden space might want to start planning what you’re going to plant. Beautiful spring flowers include:

1. Tulips:

Tulips come in a wide variety of colours, shapes, and heights. The tulip was first introduced by an Austrian biologist called Carolus Clusius. They bloom on bulbous plants with large, showy flowers with six petals. There are roughly 100 species of tulips that came from Central Asia where they grow wild. It is said that tulips symbolise imagination, dreaminess, perfect love, and a declaration of love. Fun fact: tulip bulbs are a good replacement for onions in cooking!

2. Orchids:

Orchids are considered one of the most fascinating and exquisite flower in the world. They most commonly found in the tropics where they grow on the branches and trunks of trees. In temperate zones however, they tend to grow on the ground. Orchids require specific care. The rule of thumb for orchids grown at home is to water them every 5-12 days depending on the type of orchid, the temperature the plant is grown in and the time of year. During warm summer months orchids should be watered more often than in colder winter months.

3. Roses:

Every woman in the world is in love with roses. They are beautiful, fragrant and romantic. Roses are a symbol of love, beauty and even war and politics. With so many colours to choose from, roses have always been the most popular choice of gift flowers around the world. Throughout history, the meaning and symbolism of roses has differed throughout the world. In ancient Egypt for instance, roses were used as offerings for the Goddess Isis.

4. Daisies:

The origin of the world daisy is Anglo Saxon and literally means ‘day’s eye’, because daisies open at dawn, the beginning of the day. A daisy is said to symbolise innocence and purity, it can also symbolise new beginnings. They say that they flower meaning of daisy is ‘loyal love’ and ‘I will never tell.’

Flowers are very beautiful but must be cared for. This includes knowing how often to water them, where they are best grown, how much sunlight they need, how much shade they need and what kind of nutrients will allow them to best grow. It is therefore worth learning a little bit before you start planting your garden, that way your flowers will stay beautiful for as long as possible.
