Phalaenopsis Mericlone

Did you know lilies were her favorite? Or so I thought, it wasn’t until I came across her diary years after she passed that I realized orchids were her passion. In her upscale home in central Cuba Blanca Fernandez my great-grandmother had an Orchid collection that caused her to be known as the garden envy of the block. Blanca’s garden was extraordinary she had hundreds of orchids in her green house, which was nothing more than a small area of her yard that was turned into an orchid garden. Her upmost favorite was the cattleya, and she treasured all the colors shapes and sizes they came in. Though very few pictures she possed her worldly illustrations were more than enough.
This love was passed onto me I now have my own collection and hobby of orchids my favorite is the pansy(melontonopsis)an orchid that looks like the flower pansy but when admiring the actual orchid species is like looking at the sun with so many colors and designs. With over 20,000 different species of orchids and thieves trying to clone, hybrid, and discover new ones.
Orchids are a collection of true mystery and thrill. I bet you didn’t know a Phalaenopsis can last up to three months or even longer. Mine was in tight bud in December, bloomed in January and lasted until mid May, but that isn’t all while my orchid was in bloom a whole new stem was forming and has now been in bloom since the beginning of June.
This is just the tip of the iceberg for orchid lovers– we have clubs, seminars, we are featured in magazines, and we have stories so intriguing and mysterious that the discovery channel can’t get a hold of. In Columbia (south America) there is the mystery of the black orchid, a mystery that dates back to the roman empire, it is said that the nuns in Columbia have this mystery locked up in their covenant and no outsiders are aloud a glimpse of the phenomenon.
That is not all. Here in South Florida a couple of years ago a farmer created a orchid known today as the kaleidoscope. While showing her off at one of the festivals a man offers him a lot of money for the orchid promising not to mericlone it (make seedlings of the plant) just for addition to his collection paid the man a few thousand dollars only to steal the creation. The orchid thief was a orchid grower that was sued by the former owner of the kaleidoscope for a few million dollars. This is only the beginnings of the stories. In the book the orchid thief also based on South Florida growers you go into a whole new dimension of orchid envy. I’ll stay in my garden with the spirit of my great- grandmother whom I know comes and enjoys my small collection and my triumph of turning my love and passion into a small business.
