Phalaenopsis Orchids Types   by Jasmine Smith

The word Phalaenopsis came from the Greek word phalaina (a moth) and opsis (looks like). It refers to the moth like appearance of some of the flowers. Phalaenopsis or Phal for short is an orchid type with approximately sixty species. It is one of the popular orchids through the development of artificial hybrids. They are native throughout Southeast Asia from the Himalayan mountains to the islands of Palawan and Zamboanga del Norte in the Philippines and northern Australia.

The generic name is probably connected to the genus Phalaena. This name was given by Carolus Linnaeus to a group of large moths. The flowers of some species of Phals are supposed to resemble moths that are flying. The orchid species are sometimes called Moth orchids for this very reason.

Phalaenopsis require general conditions. For the light they receive, the preferred level one thousand to one thousand five hundred foot-candles. The ideal annual temperature range they need is 60 ° F. (16 ° Celsius) to 85 ° F. (24°Celsius). You won’t harm them even if the temperature drops lower than the minimum or rise higher than the maximum although they tolerate higher temperature better. Phals also enjoy frequent watering all year round. They only have their leaves and stems to store water. They like their roots damp but not soggy. Closed watch is advice when watering to avoid Phals from rotting. They are considered heavy feeders when it comes to fertilizers. Fertilizing every seven days with several clear watering in between during spring through early autumn will make your Phals contented and happy. A light feeding will suffice during late autumn through winter.

These Phalaenopsis are classified in to two. The first one is group with long, branched inflorescense. They also have large, round flowers with tints of rose or white. The second group has short stems. They have less rounded waxy flowers that give off vivid colors.

SEEDLING SIZE. P. Intermedia is a natural occurring hybrid between P. aphrodite and P. equestris. This is a remake of the hybrid, as such the progeny will vary colorwise, between the white and pink colors of the parents. Blooms throughout the year. Unlike some natural occuring hybrids, Phalaenopsis xintermedia has formed sexually reproducing, stable populations in the wild, so it is often sold in …
