Growing orchids in your greenhouse by Gabriel Ash

If you are looking to brighten up your greenhouse, then orchids are the perfect choice of plant to grow. With over 26,000 species, orchids make up one of the largest flowing plant families on earth. The many different species can be found in many different parts of the world, including Asia, America and even above the Artic Circle.
As orchids come from many different parts of the world, their needs will vary. Before you begin growing orchids, you will need to research the needs of the type that you are planning to grow so that you can familiarise yourself with their requirements. Gaining knowledge of the specific requirements of the type of orchid you are planning to grow will enable you to provide it with everything it needs in order to thrive.
As orchids have different climatic requirements, you will need to make sure the temperature in your greenhouse is just right when growing them. Try to maintain the required temperature for your orchid. Some may need a warm climate whilst others will require a cool climate. Add ventilators and fan heaters to your greenhouse to help maintain temperature levels when growing your orchid.
Although orchids do not require too much sunlight, you will still need to make sure that they have access to a certain amount of light. Be sure to provide your orchids with plenty of winter sun so that they can prepare for growth in the spring. You will need to have good air circulation within your greenhouse to reduce the risk of your orchid becoming damaged by bacteria or plant diseases.
Although orchids do not require very much water, you will need to make sure that you water your orchid at least once a week. Water the orchid once the flower has dried out, but try to avoid over-watering your orchid. Orchids do not need much water at the end of the flowering period.
If you experience problems with pests when growing orchids, then try to research safe methods of pest removal, as the chemicals from many insect sprays may damage your plants. Use an organic spray or traps that will keep pests at bay without harming your orchid.
Growing orchids require plenty of patience and perseverance, but by providing your orchid with just the right amount of care and researching its specific needs, the results will be rewarding.
