Humans have inhabited Ecuador since 3500 BC and many civilizations arose throughout Ecuador, such as the Machalilla culture, the Valdivia culture, and the Quitas, after whom the capital Quito is named. Ecuador was also a part of the Inca Empire. The Spanish conquered and colonized Ecuador in the 16th century. Ecuador gained its independence in 1822 and became a republic in 1830. San Francisco de Quito, or just Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is located on the easterly slopes of Pichincha, an active volcano in the Andean Mountains. Quito Ecuador travel is a must for tourists visiting South America and who wish to see Nature in all its glory. Ecuador vacations can be a lifetime memorable vacation as a tourist can not only see the Amazon Basin and its diverse flora and fauna, but also the Andes Mountains and volcanoes, frolic in the warm waters of the Pacific, and get to know and understand the diverse cultures of the people of Ecuador, including the Incas.

For colonial Spanish architecture, few cities are as beautiful as the Unesco World Heritage Sites of Cuenca and Quito.

A country with just 2 percent of the total Amazon forest within its boundaries has one third of the total bird and animal species of the Amazonian rain forests.
