Advice Column: Improving the Look of Your Home Even Before You Decorate It by Misha Vasser
The whole point of interior decorating is to make our houses look beautiful and feel comfortable to live in. Time, however, is usually not on anyoneâs side when it comes to having a pretty and fresh-looking home. When we talk about beautifying our houses, we often think about changing our dcor. However, finding ways to keep our house cleaner is just as critical to having an improved home. We can improve the look of our home by creating a schedule of all the periodic tasks one needs to do to keep the house clean (such as cleaning blinds, washing bedding, or dusting picture frames). This way, you can spend just a little time each month doing some of these jobs rather than being stuck several times a year doing them all day long. Another way to keep your house clean with less time and effort is to use job charts, motivational rewards, or other methods to get the whole family involved in cleaning. Having everyone do a little bit is much easier than trying to do everything yourself. Third, as you clean and organize, place labels on containers and shelves so you know where everything has been placed and where everything is supposed to be.
Steps to Building a Wreath
A simple but beautiful way to decorate your porch is to add a wreath to your door. Wreaths vary in many ways: the materials used, the shape chosen, the style emulated. You just need a foam ring and some silk flowers to get started. Using some heavy-duty scissors, cut the stems of your flowers, leaving about an inch of stem below the flower. Next, decide how you want the flowers to be arranged, and add them individually to the ring by pushing the stems into the foam. As you are positioning the flowers, make sure that the foam is thoroughly covered; however, you do not want your flowers to look too crowded! Your wreath will last a very long time if you use a hot glue gun to add small amounts of glue where the base of the flower touches the ring. Adding leaves or vines to your wreath works well for extra decoration or for covering up bare spots. You can choose to create wreaths using one kind of flower in many colors, or one color using many flowersâ”or a combination. Once the wreath is completed, hammer in a small nail to the top of the door and string up the wreath.
Designing Wedding Flowers
Weddings are one of the most beautiful and exciting events in anyoneâs lifetime. Every wedding can do with some flower decorations to heighten the attractiveness of the ceremony and/or celebrations. Flowers are often used to designate the bride and groomâs family and cherished friends. For women, there are corsages; men display boutonnieres, and of course, the bride carries her wedding bouquet. Garlands, shrubbery, centerpieces, vases, trellises and many more places often use flowers as adornments. It may seem like an overwhelming job to coordinate all of this, so break up your task into smaller steps. As you decide what the overall style of the wedding will be, think about the color, then the types of flowers to be used, followed by possible designs for arrangements. The color is usually a very simple decision as the bride will already be choosing the color or colors for the wedding. When it comes to choosing which types of flowers will be used, the bride may have some strong preferences there. Roses are a very traditional choice. The last phase is the arrangement style. Here, the possibilities seem endless, but sticking with one or two styles enhances the harmony and beauty of all the flower arrangements. If you follow these steps, you will do a great job regardless of how practiced you are!
Customizing Your Flower Designs
A flower arrangement that fits its surroundings is one of the basic goals of flower arranging. Flower arrangements should be designed based on their purpose. For example, when you are designing an arrangement for a funeral, there are some flowers that are natural choices because of their look and meaning, such as tulips and daisies in gentle colors. Casual flower arrangements with fun inclusions, like silk grass, can be great for a housewarming gift or neighborly gesture. For a more romantic or classy arrangement, use roses. For the perfect flower arrangement, always remember who the flower arrangement is for. When it comes to flowers, colors, and styles, think about what they would want. Remember that practice makes perfect, so keep on trying. This is an advantage of using artificial flowers: it is easy to pull out what you do not like and add something else without risking injury to one of the flowers.
