What’s wrong with my orchid?

I bought this orchid plant (Dendrobis) about 2 months ago and it was on sale because the flowers were at the end of their bloom. I didn’t mind because I know that it will flower again as I have already got a few orchids.

Anyway after about a month the leaves started turning yellow on one of the stalks so I cut all the leaves off that stalk hoping that the remaining stalk would be ok. It looked fine for a while but the leaves on the remaining stalk are turning yellow also.

I have been watering the plant about once a month letting the water run through and not letting it stand in water as you’re supposed to do with orchids. I have now moved the plant to the bathroom where it may get more light but do you think it will recover? I really don’t know what is up with it anyway…any help would be appreciated, thanks.
To TV Tech 1: Orchids do not need soil to grow in, just pieces of tree bark. And watering them once a month during winter is sufficient.

Yellow leaves are probably the most common ailment we see. Good leaf orchid care would tell us that it just could be a natural phenomenon called old age. If it seems to e happening to the oldest leaves don’t worry.

On the other hand it could be from, too much light (most common), not enough nitrogen in the fertilizer or if the medium is primarily bark. Other causes include being subjected to low temps or loss of roots (usually caused by insufficient nutrient supply).

Caring for orchids would suggest to first change the lighting and potential for low temps. For the first few weeks give them fertilizer every time you water them, after they start getting better you will only need to apply fertilizer every two – three weeks. Keep in mind that in the North being on a window sill during winter can be a cold spot.

With their refined beauty and elegant flower form, moth orchids (members of the genus Phalaenopsis are the basic black of the orchid world. In fact, moth orchids are the most popular orchids in the world, accounting for a staggering 75 percent of all orchid plant sales. More than merely beautiful, they are also among the easiest orchids to grow, whether in greenhouses, on windowsills, or under artificial lights. Professional horticulturalist and orchid expert Steven A. Frowine, author of Miniature Orchids, focuses on the new orchid stars while also providing a detailed look at the classic hybrids and species. Readers will be enticed by the book’s lavish color photographs and gratified by the wealth of practical advice on selecting and buying moth orchids. Most importantly, Frowine shares his secrets on how these glorious plants can be grown to perfection, with recommendations about light levels, potting media, watering, and feeding.
