Seven spots to visit on your holiday in Nuwara Eliya by Dora Bryan
Nuwara Eliya, situated 170 kilometres east of Colombo in the central hills of Sri Lanka, is a popular tourist destination. Huddled by three of the highest mountains in the country, it is renowned for its mild temperate climate, scenic views and tranquil surroundings. This hill country resort town is 1800 metres above sea level, and blessed with luscious tea estates, magnificent mountains and majestic waterfalls. Also known as “Little England”, Nuwara Eliya was founded by the British in the 19th century, and to this date, retains buildings from this colonial period. There are several places to visit in and around Nuwara Eliya – here are seven attractions to visit on your holiday in Nuwara Eliya.
1.Relax with a few rounds of golf at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club. Noted to be one of the best in Asia, this 18-hole course is well maintained and gives a challenging and naturally scenic experience for golfing enthusiasts.
2.Walk through and explore Horton Plains National Park. Situated 30 kilometres away from Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains is the only national park in Sri Lanka where visitors can walk about freely. It is located in the highest plateau of the country and well known for its rich biodiversity of flora and fauna and beautiful landscapes. The Plains also have interesting attractions within them, such as “Bakers Falls” and the famous “Worlds End” – a sheer one kilometre drop with a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.
3.Discover thousands of plant species at Hakgala Botanical Gardens, the highest placed garden of its kind in the world. Situated just 16 kilometres away on the Nuwara Eliya – Badulla main road, this garden is famous for its orchids, roses, ferns and spices.
4.Take a stroll within Nuwara Eliya itself, at Victoria Park. These gardens are filled with colourful roses and flowers and play host to a number of rare birds.
5.Enjoy the magnificent view on a boating trip on Lake Gregory, situated just outside the main town. Boats can easily be hired from the Lake Gregory
Boathouse and the atmosphere is perfect to indulge in a peaceful relaxing getaway.
6.Visit eye-catching waterfalls, such as Devon Falls and St. Clair’s Falls. The natural beauty of these waterfalls is heightened by lush green mountainsides – a perfect background to take photographs!
7.A visit to Nuwara Eliya is incomplete if you do not visit a tea estate or factory. Find out all you need to know about tea at various factories that offer guided tours for visitors. Famous spots to visit include Oliphant Estate and Pedro Tea Estate as well as Labookele Tea Centre.
