Orchids as Houseplants are a Favorite   by Zack Ryan

Orchids, once a mysterious tropical plant, have become one of the most popular house plants. Whether it’s because the orchid has bright colors or whether the orchid has beautiful blooms, one thing for sure is orchids are easy to care for. Orchids come in many species and colors and have many hybrids. The temperatures they usually thrive in range from the mid 70′s to mid 80′s Fahrenheit.

Depending upon the particular orchid species, they vary as to how long they will bloom. Take for example, the Phalaenopsis. This orchid does well indoors at home or in the office. It can bloom from two to a maximum of three months. Other orchids bloom, on average, for a shorter period of time. The Cattleyas plant can flower for up to a month while other orchid species may bloom only once a year. It’s a good idea to find out about your particular species that you will care for indoors. There are some that can bloom several times a year and others that bloom continuously throughout the year.

Fragrance is a common signature of orchids. Fragrances can vary from being very strong to very delicate. When you compare orchid varieties as a whole, the fragrances vary widely. Some scents are fruity while other scents are flowery. Some orchid scents are amazingly familiar such as coconut, lilac, citrus, raspberry and chocolate.

While most household plants are planted in potting soil, orchids should be planted in a medium of bark. Fir bark is a popular material in use. In addition to bark, growers will also use New Zealand Sphagnum Moss. You can use one or the other or even a combination of both. In general, you want to use a medium that has three characteristics: the ability to hold water, the ability to hold nutrients, and a “cling-to” surface area that the orchid can grab.

Like other plants, watering is vital to good orchid health. Orchids should be planted in pots that allow for good drainage. In addition to giving your orchids plenty of water, they also need a way to release the excess water. When potted properly, your orchids will get all the water it needs, the nutrients it needs, plus air circulation. It is typical to water your orchids every 12 to 14 days. You may water more or less depending upon how dry it is in your area. If you are using New Zealand Sphagnum Moss, you may not need to water as often since the moss can hold moisture. A good rule of thumb is to allow the medium of your orchids to become fairly dry before the next watering.

No matter which orchid you choose to grow, they all require some form of light, diffused light; light that is not over powering. Orchids can do well if placed in a room that faces east. In their natural tropical habitat, they receive both sunny and shady days. Your orchids will tell you if they are receiving too much light: They will display yellow leaves. When this happens start increasing the time your orchid is in the shade. Yellow leaves can also be a sign of insufficient feeding. Orchids should receive fertilizer about once every 14 days. Generally, it is a good idea to water your plant first before feeding if the potting medium is dry. And when you feed the plant, dilute the fertilizer first before applying.
